History:
The Cavachon is a cross between the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the Bichon Frise. The ideal hybrid has the playfulness, intelligence, and coat of the Bichon mixed with the sweetness and even temperament of the Cavalier. Typically, Cavachons are the result of breeding two purebred dogs instead of breeding Cavachon to Cavachon, which tends to make a less desirable coat. The Cavachon has a low-shedding coat, and many sport the Cavalier's signature "thumbprint," a spot on the forehead considered one of the most desirable physical characteristics of the Cavalier.
Personality:
Known for his kind nature, the Cavachon makes a wonderful companion. Both parents are consummate "lapdogs," and this hybrid is no exception. Intelligent and playful, he can be surprisingly active. He is friendly and outgoing to everyone he meets, which makes him easy to socialize. He loves giving and receiving affection from friends and family.
At home:
The Cavachon can live just about anywhere - as long as he's with you. His size and low-shedding coat make him an excellent apartment dog. He loves (and expects) to be the center of attention and enjoys snuggling up on the couch with his loved ones. He also likes to make up games to entertain the family.
Recommended activities:
Although not eligible for American Kennel Club (AKC) activities, some clubs allow mixed breeds to participate. The Cavachon might enjoy agility, obedience, canine freestyle or therapy.
Exercise:
The Cavachon's exercise requirements are relatively low, although he still needs daily walks to keep him mentally and physically stimulated.
Feeding:
The Cavachon must have a high-quality, size-appropriate diet. His adorable face makes it hard to say no when he asks for an extra tidbit at the dinner table, but keeping him from becoming overweight is best for his health.
Training:
Cavachons are intelligent and eager to please, which makes training a pleasure. Gentle, positive methods work best with this sensitive breed.
Compatibility:
Cavachons are social dogs who love to meet new people. They are great with children, but their smaller size means that young children need to be taught how to properly handle them. They get along well with other dogs and pets.
Health:
Cavachons can live up to 8 to 12 years. Health problems may include heart mitral valve disease (MVD); hip dysplasia; and patellar luxation.
Fun fact:
Cavachons love to play in water.
Grooming blurb:
The typical Cavachon has a soft, silky coat that requires frequent brushing with a comb or rake, especially if the coat is kept long. Some owners prefer to keep their Cavachon in a shorter pet clip, but even this lower-maintenance look requires weekly brushing.
