Personality:
The American Wirehair is a sweet-tempered, gentle breed. They are intelligent and curious and playful without being high-strung. American Wirehairs like to be the center of attention and enjoy playing with all types of toys. They make loving, affectionate and loyal companions.
At home:
The American Wirehair adapts well to just about any living situation. These active, agile cats are interested in their surroundings and love to be involved in whatever the family happens to be doing. Although they can be quiet and reserved at times, they do have a zanier, more playful side, which often involves racing around the house. They tend not to like being held but instead prefer to be perched nearby on a comfy chair to keep an eye on their loved ones. However, they will crawl into their owner's laps when the mood strikes, especially if they sense that they might need some cheering up.
Feeding:
Some American Wirehairs experience food allergies, so they require a high-quality food. Because of the rougher nature of their hair, a hairball preventive is also recommended.
Compatibility:
American Wirehairs are usually friendly and get along well with all types of people, as well as children. They also enjoy the company of other pets.
Health:
The average life span of the breed is 12 to 15 years. Although most American Wirehairs enjoy robust good health, some do suffer from allergies.
Grooming blurb:
The American Wirehair's skin can be sensitive and needs regular gentle bathing to get rid of excess oils. Their ears must be checked for earwax buildup.
