You've just adopted a kitten - congratulations,  you and your feline friend will give each other many years of love and affection. But like any new parent, you undoubtedly have questions about her needs and what to expect. These tips can help you start off your relationship right and provide a safe and sensible environment for your new family member :

  • Try to spend lots of time at home for the first few days to help your kitten adjust to her new surroundings.
  • Cats can sometimes feel scared in big, new spaces, so consider keeping her in one a room for a few days when she’s alone, letting her out to explore other parts of your home when you can supervise.
  • Your kitten will sleep about 16 hours a day, so provide her with a safe place to get away from other pets and children in the home.
  • Designate a place for your kitten’s food and water bowls and litter box. Don’t put these items close together, as your kitten may refuse to eat if the litter box is too close to her food. (Who wants to eat supper in the bathroom, after all?)
  • Kittens need some litter box training.  Place her in the litter box after she eats, wakes up, or if she starts sniffing around the house. Read more tips about litter box set up, read Litter Box lowdown.
  • Pet proof your home.  Pick up small items your kitten could swallow, including rubber bands, cotton swabs, paper clips, etc.  Bundle up electrical wires and window blind cords.  Make sure household cleaning products are out of reach.
  • Your kitten will want to climb and scratch. Buy a sturdy scratching post and encourage her to use it whenever you see her about to climb or scratch a piece of furniture. Praise your kitten for using it.
  • Cats need to play to stay healthy and to use their energy appropriately. Provide toys that she can pounce, chase, or bat around. Never use your hands or feet as kitten toys.  Read more about habits every kitten and puppy should know.
