One of the most important things you can do to keep your cat healthy, happy and out of trouble is to make sure your feline friend isn't bored while you're away.

While it's true that they'll nap a good part of the time, you'll want to make sure that when she's awake, she has constructive, fun and challenging things to do.

Here are some tips to keep your cat amused in your absence:

  • Freeze some kibble or treats into ice cubes, then put a few cubes in your cat's dish on your way out. She'll stay busy licking the cubes to get to the food hidden inside.
  • Create a scent or food trail. Leave a trail of tiny treats through the home, or simply rub a piece of aromatic cheese onto several non-absorbent places, leading to a small treat.
  • Leave the radio or television on low volume in another room to give your cat the feeling that someone else is home with her.
  • If you're going to be away from home for longer than normal, have a neighbor drop by to visit. Even cats that are not especially social like to see and hear their human friends.
