Some of the same rules apply, the most important of which is consistency. If you want your cat to stay off the kitchen counters, the rule has to apply all the time.

Don't scold her for it one day, and then invite her to jump up there the next. And while cats may not respond to praises of "Good Kitty," they will respond positively to food rewards and affection. So if you need your cat to stay off your lap while you're working at the computer but want her to relax with you while watching TV try this: gently push her off your lap and give a firm "No" when she jumps in your lap while you're working. Later when you're stretched out on the couch, invite her up and give her a small treat and lots of love. She'll eventually learn the time and place where the behavior is appropriate. The same basic principles apply to modifying other behaviors as well. Just remember, it will take time and patience, but if you stick with it, you and your cat will come to better understand one another.

Smart Tip on Training

Never yell at or physically discipline your cat. These behaviors are not only inhumane, but can cause your cat to become anxious and fearful of you, and can make bad behaviors even worse.
