The Cat
PetSmart - PetSmart
Kitty celebs, both real and fictitious, litter American history, proving that the feline mystique really is the cat's meow. Here's a look at some cats that've gone down in history!
Morris the Cat: The cat with nine lives is said to be the most famous cat in America. The fourteen pound orange tabby rescued from a Chicago animal shelter was the spokesperson for Purina's 9 Lives cat food. He could even veto cat food flavors he didn't approve of!
Socks: President Clinton played Pet Parent to Socks, who called the White House home. Adults and children throughout the nation became fans of this First Cat, ensuring Socks' place in American history.
The Cat in the Hat: Theodor Geisel, known as Dr. Seuss, wrote and created The Cat in the Hat, which was an instant American success. Known best for transforming a dull, rainy afternoon into a magical and just-messy-enough adventure, The Cat in the Hat has a place in every reader's heart.
Scarlett: This brave feline mother made news in 1996 when she carried her five kittens, one by one, out of a burning Brooklyn, N.Y. apartment. Scarlett earned her name because of the burns she received while saving her babies. Her story had a happy ending when she and all of her surviving kittens were adopted after the incident.
