Teething
PetSmart -
Puppies will nip and chew for several reasons, such as teething, looking for attention and boredom. Never encourage your puppy to nip. If he attempts to nip or grab at you, walk away. If your puppy does nip you, say âouch!â in a high-pitched voice and walk away.
Never squeeze your puppy's mouth shut, slap him or use any type of physical punishment, since it usually makes the behavior worse.
Managing the Teething
Around week 16 (4 months old), your puppy's permanent teeth will begin to appear. Just like with children, they are born with few sensory capabilities and poor motor skills. However, taste and smell capabilities are very strong from the beginning. As a result, a lot of what they learn is through chewing on things. Chewing is okay - as long as it is directed at the proper item. Encourage your puppy to chew on proper chew toys. Reward him for chewing on an appropriate toy rather than your shoes.
