Stop Your Dog from Begging at the Table

If you're the type who continually gives in and doles out treats on demand, you may be doing more harm than good to your dog. After all, being overweight is just as unhealthy for animals as it is for humans.

Here's some ways to stop a begging problem:

Consistency is the key. Be consistent about both the amount of food you give your dog and when you give it, and you'll greatly lessen the chances that he'll beg or scavenge at other times. Although it is fine to feed your dog at a time of day that's convenient for you (as long as it's every day), you need to decide on a particular time of day when you're going to feed them, whether in the morning, afternoon or evening and stick to that schedule.

One way to keep your dog from begging is to teach him to associate your dinnertime with something completely unrelated to food. For instance, you could train your dog to go to a quiet spot and lie down anytime people are sitting at the dinner table or anytime you ring the dinner chime.

Feeding your dog table scraps while you're eating is a surefire way to encourage begging. Your dog will come to expect his share when you sit down to eat. Feed your dog made for him, not people food, and you won't find a wet nose next to your plate on the dinner table.
