Even if you don't have children in your home, it's a good idea for your cat to get used to being around kids, because it's going to happen at some point. The most important thing to remember is to always supervise your pet when she's interacting with children. It's also important to teach children to treat pets gently, with kindness and respect.
Be aware that your cat may decide to hide from everyone when you have guests in your home. Don't worry, she'll come out again when things are back to normal.
Getting to Know Each Other
It's very important to teach children how to interact safely with pets. Some basic rules to teach children are:
- Ask permission before petting someone else's cat
- It's best to wait and let the cat approach you
- If she approaches you, let the cat sniff a closed fist, then pet gently on the side of the head or along the back
- Leave the cat alone if she's eating, sleeping or chewing a toy
