Sneaky Coccidiosis and Its Effects

PetSmart - Banfield, The Pet Hospital®

Coccidiosis is a parasitic disease of the intestinal tract caused by a microscopic organism. The disease generally spreads from one pet to another by contact with stool from infected pets.

It is more severe in young or weakened pets, and can cause signs like bloody diarrhea. In serious cases, severe diarrhea, blood loss, and dehydration can lead to death. Healthy adult pets may often carry a small number of these organisms with no symptoms.

Diagnosis is based on microscopic examination of the stool.

Several medications exist for treatment. If dehydration, debilitation, or significant blood loss has occurred, hospitalization, fluid therapy and additional medications may be necessary.

IMPORTANT POINTS

  • Use all medications as prescribed by your veterinarian
  • Clean and dry bedding/sleeping area should be provided for ill pets
  • Provide a high-quality, balanced diet
  • Keep infected patients away from non-infected pets
  • Clean up stools promptly
  • Monitor your pet's progress carefully and have him/her rechecked as directed by your veterinarian

If you have questions about this or any medical topic, please contact your veterinarian or Banfield hospital today.
