Kitten-Proofing Your Home

Just like new parents must 'baby-proof' their homes, you must 'kitten-proof' yours before your new kitten arrives. Kittens have a lot of energy and they're very curious, so you need to make your home as safe as possible.

Collect all small and breakable objects like nick-knacks and put them in a room that's off-limits to your kitten. Keep the door to the 'off-limits' room closed.

Many houseplants are poisonous if ingested. Move plants to the off-limits room.

Remove all table cloths from tables or your kitten might climb or hang on them.

Make sure all toxins, such as bathroom and kitchen cleaners, are secured in a cabinet with a latch.

Unplug all small household appliances when you're not using them. Your kitten might nibble on the cords. Also, inspect your home for any frayed electrical cords that can shock your kitten if it tries to play with them.

Cut cords on blinds or wrap them tightly around a bracket. Your kitten can hang itself if it becomes tangled in one of these cords.

Close all doors and windows and make sure window screens are tightly secured. Many careless owners leave unscreened windows open and their kittens escape or fall out. You may have heard tales about cats surviving falls from high buildings. However, a fall from a second story can seriously injure or kill a cat.
