Keep Your Cat Safe This Summer
PetSmart - PetSmart
When temperatures heat up, so does your pet. Here's how to help your cat cool it during the summer months.
- People aren't the only ones who can get heat stroke--pets are susceptible to it as well! It's best to keep your cat indoors throughout the season, but if your cat can get outside, provide access to fresh water and a shady spot at all times.
- If you're not planning for kittens, the need for spaying and neutering is more important than ever during summer. Spaying and neutering help reduce the pet overpopulation problem.
- Don't shave your cat down to the skin--though it seems like it would help keep her cool, her coat actually insulates her against the heat. Make sure grooming is appropriate for the climate.
- Having a backyard barbecue? Don't share any of the spread, which could cause digestive problems and even choking, with your cat.
- If you open up your house to let air in during the summer months, install secure window screens (or safety bars) in any of the windows which will be left open, as pets can fall out of windows, and fire-escapes and be seriously injured or killed.
- Talk with your veterinarian about flea and tick prevention. There are new treatments available that are safe and effective.
Summertime living isn't always easy on our furry friends. Your cat is susceptible to many of the same heat-related issues humans are, but taking these easy steps will help you celebrate in the sun knowing your cat is healthy and happy.
