Creating Harmony Between Your Jack Russell and Your Child

Assuming that you can commit to the dog for his whole life, you have to decide whether a Parson or Jack Russell Terrier is the right dog for your children. Lots of Russells do live successfully with kids, but you need to consider carefully the traits that make them a poor choice for some families. As we’ve seen, some terriers have a strong instinct to defend themselves against actions they perceive as threatening. A child, especially a young one, may not intend the dog any harm, but the dog may not understand that. Even a well-socialized Russell may not tolerate being poked or prodded, having his ears pulled, or being teased. He will see the child either as a threat or as a “puppy” and a nuisance, and he will respond in what he thinks is an appropriate manner - he’ll growl, snap, or bite to defend himself or make the child behave. Many Russells are also extremely possessive and will guard their food, beds, toys, favorite chair, spot on the couch, and even whole rooms! Parents need to take the time to train both the child and dog together and supervise interaction.

Purchase “The Jack Russell Terrier ” and discover a whole new world of dogs through other Terra-Nova publications at your local PetSmart.
