Choosing the Right Brush for Your Dog
PetSmart - Tracey Fisher/PetSmart Grooming Expert
Choosing the right brush for your dog is not a "one-size-fits-all" situation. Dogs come in all sizes and shapes, and have coats of different lengths, thicknesses and textures. Each coat type requires a different tool and even a different technique for effective grooming. However, when partnered with an ounce of information and a pinch of professional guidance, selecting the right tool, and using it properly is as easy as 1-2-3.
Step 1) Your dog’s coat.
Selecting the right tool starts with understanding your dog’s coat type. That’s easy to do with pure bred dogs and maybe just a little trickier with those wonderful mixed breeds. To identify your dog’s coat type, refer to this list of coat types and select the group that you feel matches your dog’s coat based on breed or coat characteristic.
Step 2) The right tool.
There are seven different basic tools for you to choose from and understanding the design and function of each tool will help you select the one that is right for your dog’s coat. See the complete list of grooming tools you shouldn't be without.
Step 3) Technique.
Brushing your dog's hair is similar to brushing your own hair. Start at the ends and gently work your way down into the coat, eventually getting all the way down to the skin. Work the teeth or pins down into the coat and gently pull back up through the hair in a "pat and pull" method. Dragging the brush along the top of the coat will brush the hair on the top but will miss removing those painful and potentially harmful mats and undercoat hidden deeper in the pet’s fur. Your PetStyling professional will be happy to give you a quick lesson on using the right grooming tool on your pet, and will probably have a tip or two to help make it a more enjoyable experience for you and your dog.
With dog and grooming tool in hand, drop by the salon and ask for a quick demo on how to hold and use your grooming tool. A quick lesson and a regular grooming routine will have your dog looking and feeling great in no time.
