Boston’s, like all dogs, not only enjoy chewing, they need to chew. Especially puppies, which will experience teething as their baby teeth erupt and fall out. Again, there is a vast and seemingly endlessly entertaining selection of dog toys available, and you and your Boston can have a lot of fun selecting favorites. Your healthiest and most long-lasting selections, however, will be toys made for your Boston’s body type and chewing power. Hard nylon and rubber toys are made for real gnawing and gnashing. Be careful with plush toys that contain squeakers or noise-makers. Some Boston’s will chew right through the material and may swallow the squeaker, which could become lodged in the throat.

There are many kinds of edible chews for dogs that provide nutritional enhancement or breath fresheners. Most are strong enough for Bostons to get a good chew out of before breaking into bits that can be eaten. These should not be substitutes for the more long-lasting chew toys, but they make an enjoyable break for your dog.
