Airtight solutions for storing your pet's food safely
PetSmart - Excerpt from “The West Highland White Terrier” published by T.F.H. Publications
Improperly stored food can become breeding grounds for molds and toxins, some deadly. Buy only the freshest foods available. If you use a commercial food, check the manufacturing date.
Should you buy in bulk?
With a small breed like a Westie, you’re best off buying in small bags. Buying bulk may save you some money, but in the long run the money you save on food may end up going to your vet. Smaller bags get used more quickly, which means the food stays fresher.
Storage
Store the food in a dry, cool place away from sunlight. Keep the food in the house or in another place with a stable temperature. Temperature fluctuations can produce moisture in the food storage container and encourage the development of mold or toxins. Store the food in its original packaging or in a special airtight container. Don’t use a plastic garbage can - even clean plastics can produce dangerous vapors.
If the food smells bad, or if your dog suddenly refuses to eat it - even though he appears hungry enough to chew his own feet off, discard the food, or return it for a refund.
