Hi everyone,
This is my first time on this message board, but i'm not sure were else to turn to. Here is my problem and if anyone can help it would greatly appreciated.
My wife and I have two boy cats. they are littermates and are a little over a year and a half old. Recently a friend of ours has given us her cat because she could not keep it anymore. If we didn't take it in, the cat was going to go to the pound. The new cat is female and is opposite colors of our two boys. She is also a few months younger than them.
Shortly after bringing the new girl home we gave her a room of her own to feel comfortable with us and her surroundings. we tried originally to let they three cats feel eachother out, but that ended in a fight between one of our boys and the girl. shortly after the fight, the one boy who got in the fight starting hissing and growling at the other boy. We keep the girl locked in the one room and we have moved all their dishes to the door so that they can smell eachother when they eat. The problem is that neither of the boys will eat now that the trays have been moved. Another problem is that the one boy has been hissing at the other for what appears to be no reason. one minute they are laying together, grooming eachother, the next minute, one is hissing at the other. When i have tried to show dominacne over the hissing boy he starts to hiss and sometimes tries to bite me.The last problem is that sometimes we leave the door to the girl's room open a crack so they can see eachother. the boys stand there and look, but the girl hisses at them.
So to make a long story short...
What can we do to get our boys to stop hissing at each other?
what can we do to get the girl to stop hissing everytime she sees the boys?
what can we do to help all three cats to get along?
and, what can we do to get the boy cat to stop hissing at me?
Again thank you for any help you give.

sorry to hear about all the hissing...lol
in my experience, what you tried to do in the first place ( letting the cats feel each other out) is seriously the best technique i have ever come across...yes, it may take some time, but look at it this way...at least you don't have to go through the new cat marking territory everywhere like i had to go through with the new cat i took on a year and a half ago! i won't make you ill with the amount of things i've thrown away do to being ruined by cat urine...lol...
i think you should just let them duke it out once or twice and they will fall into place as they grow older....sorrry i couldn't be more help...just wanted to give ya some support =)

my cats were like that the first few weeks...i left them alone...and only got between them if it got really bad...my cats got over it after awhile...lol then i went andgot a puppy...and it took them awhile to adjust to him too..now they are all really close and sleep together...i just let them work it out..it prolly is a pecking order..my mare i had also got into bad fights out in the field but once again people and trainers told me they would all soon learn their place in the pack it might take awhile...good luck!

I agree with the #2 comment, if the female is not spayed you wil have a serious problem with your boys, now and a real one when she is ready to breed. The food could be put on the roof it does not matter where or when the female is fed, the boys will smell it just as they smell the female. If the cats do not settle in together within a week, I would consider finding a new home for the female, she is use to being the only cat in the home anyway and may never bond with the boys. not to mention the boys are beginning to fuss already ,, this causes serious problems for thier well being. Good luck

Is the female cat spayed? If not, then that could definitely cause a 'ruckus' between your two male cats.
