There's a great new feature on PetSmart.com (links below) to help find the right fit if you're considering getting a small pet for someone in your family this holiday.
This handy tool helps you research the pet you're considering before going to the store to buy or adopt it. It provides you with information on the pet's habits and it's lifespan, as well as any what special needs the pet has.
Researching helped me: I was planning on getting a hamster to add to my family for me and my 7-year-old daughter, but after checking in to the variety of small pets and their habits, I discovered that a guinea pig was a much better fit for us. (And I adore him!)
Please remember: if you going to gift someone a pet, you should know that person is well-prepared--and wants--the committment that having that pet entails. Researching the pet together can be a good way of learning the needs of the pet and open that conversation. Some small pets have very long lifespans (15-20 years) while others are very short (3 years). These are important things to consider when planning to add a pet to your family.
You can also talk to any PetSmart associate if you have questions about the care or features of a specific pet. They're there to make sure you have all the information you need to make a good decision.
