Hello my famliy and i were considering on getting a GREAT DANE puppy. But i have read on how you have to give them special food and feed them at scheduled times. But you see if we were to get a puppy we wouldnt be allowed to have it indoors only out. but we we do have a large yard and are considering putting a small airconditioned house outside for the dog. but i was wondering if anyone owns a great dane, if they could comment on some tips on raising one and the food to feed it, or any useful information to us would be great . please any suggestions are welcomed. THANK- YOU!:)

I currently have 2 Great Dane in my house and have had 4 other danes in my lifetime. There are as many untruths about danes as there are danes. First.. food. They need a good quality food just like any other dog but serve half the food twice a day and limit activity for one hour after feeding.

Great Danes are Great house dogs! Once they get passed about 18 months old the only race you will have is who gets to the couch first. Please walk your dane every day because the world needs to see it and the dog needs to show off.

You must be warned before you get a dane.. they are the world's largest lap dog. When they get close to you they will lean on you. Finally they are also know as the heartbreakers. They will still your heart the day you bring them home, make you love them more everyday, even get you to laugh at their silly ways and leave you after 9 to 11 years.

If I or any other Great Dane owner can help you in any way.. simply ask.. we love talking them.

I havnt had a great dane but 2 English Mastiffs. I have been around a few working at the Petsmart Petshotel and they seem to be great dogs but you have to remember big dogs dont live quite as long as the smaller dogs.

Princess,
I don't think you should get a Great Dane puppy at this time. These dogs are very expensive to keep (they eat a lot :-))and do have some health concerns. The puppies grow very fast and you are correct that a special food is necessary for proper bone growth. They need to be fed with the bowl raised and about three times a day. Large, deep chested dogs, like Danes are susceptible to bloat, which is a killer. The most important thing is your puppy couldn't be in the house. Danes are actually not accustomed to being an outdoor dog and why have a dog if they can't be with you (their pack). I wish you well :-)
