Cody is almost 10 months old and while not a perfectly house trained dog yet, is doing really well. Except when it rains (which I have been getting a lot of lately here in NJ). We go outside and he urinates no problem. However, he then becomes obsessed with drinking from puddles, licking the grass and licking the pavement and does nothing but that. After 10-15 minutes of fighting with him we cave and bring him inside. I'd say within no more than 5 minutes he poops in the house.
It is frustrating b/c we are doing our part by bringing him out but he just cant leave the water alone. I give him water about 20 min before going out and it does not help.
What can I do?
I suggest you take him out with a leash. When he pees, you praise him. Then tell him go "poo poo" or whatever word you use. If he starts to drink out of puddles (very dangerous) or lick pavement, grass, etc. tug the leash and tell him "no" then say "go poo poo". You need to keep at it until he goes :-( You may be out there an hour or more, but you've got to get him to go once and then you can praise him (maybe even a treat) and he'll get the idea that's what you want him to do. It's tough but worth it in the end. Good luck!!

Take him out on a short leash, so he can't lick the puddles.
