Hi! i'm new here so i dont really know how this works. Ok,so my dog Windy is scared of leaving the backyard, she hates going indoors and she runs away when she sees that I have a leash in my hand. My other dog,Sunny,is the opposite, she loves going for walks. I thought Windy would take after her,but she hasn't. I need some tips to help her not to be scared of leaving the backyard.

It sounds as if your dog has a few issues, so let's work on them one by one.

Step by Step: On the leash.

1. Put Sunny in the house. This exercise is for you and Windy only. You need to do this in a quiet place where Windy feels safe. That also means no other people, dogs or distractions.

2. Don't let Windy see the leash fully extended. You can accomplish this in STEALTH MODE -- before you enter the yard: Hold the leash balled up in your hand so it looks like an innocuous blob. Grab a lawn chair or whatever and sit to relax. After you and Windy are totally relaxed, invite Windy to come over for some affection or a snack. If Windy is snack driven, you could even put a snack in your hand with the leash-blob.

3. Let Windy smell the leash-blob in your hand. Pet Windy with "both" hands and make sure you use the leash-blob to give her a good scratching. Once you are both relaxed scratch her right around her collar.

4. You are still in STEALTH MODE. As you scratch or pet Windy around the collar, and she is totally relaxed, quietly put the leash on the collar, give her a snack and keep on scratching for a little while. It's best not to make a big deal about the whole thing. Don't get excited the first time you succeed. Just remember: stealth, relax, scratch, leash, snack, scratch.

5. In STEALTH MODE, quietly and carefully set the leash on the ground. Let Windy walk around by herself with the leash trailing behind her. She will give it a few seconds notice and that should be all. After a minute or so, invite her back to you for a snack. As you pet Windy, slowly ball up the leash in one hand and disconnect it with your other hand. Snack. Stay calm.

Repeat this exercise a few times, write me back, and we will move on to exercise 2: You moving Windy forward on the leash.

YOU COULD TRY AND GIVE HER PRAISE AND TREATS WHEN YOU HAVE THE LEASH AND OUT ON THE WALK. SPEAK VERY SOFTLY.

I found her digging in a trash can, so she LOVES to eat everything. She's a talker. Likes to chase her sister around the house.
