i have a 3 year old male toy poodle who is very aggressive. he will growl at people even if they are being nice to him. He has not been fixed. Since he is so small, I have been a little skeptical about putting him through such an ordeal. Is there any hope that he will mellow out if I get him fixed? Is there anything I can do? This is very important to me.
Remember this is only my thoughts but I had an agressive dog. A rather large dog at that an yes getting him fixed helped a lot. Also, I am sure some prof training may also help with this matter. But in my option it may partly be the dogs personality. He may think he is protecting his owner. Either way you should show him the same loyalty. By protecting him from himself. Don't bring him into situations that fuel the agression. Muzzel him if you fear the safety of others if need be, keep him on a leash, whatever it takes to be a responsible dog owner. But don't give up on your friend he might think he is protecting you out of loyalty. So do all you can do to protect him! Good luck! Talk to your vet too.

He behaves in that manner because he's been allowed to. I had a miniature poodle, male, who was "unfriendly" so I know what you are dealing with. First, get him neutered. It's really rather minor surgery for a male and I'm sure he'll do fine. It will help with his frustration level and it might mellow him some. Then you can start with the training. Tell people to completely ignore him when they're around. No looking at him, talking to him or touching him and if he growls or behaves badly you immediately tell him "NO" and give him a sharp tap in the shoulder area. Check out some "Dog Whisperer" episodes or DVDs. You can learn some tips and information on behavior. I wish you both well :-)
