I have a Daschund who is 13 yrs old whom I love very much. He just got weighed and is 20.3 lbs compared to 18.7lbs back in May '09 and I give him a little bit of pumpkin mixed with some carrots, peas and sometimes beans. I also get frozen vegtables mixture of broccoli, cauliflower, and carrots and gie them to him frozen.
I am trying ecerything my Vererinarian has suggested, but can't seem to get him to loose weight back down to 17lbs.
Anyone have same problem or suggestions how to help him lose weight.
He had a ruptured disc removed 7 yrs ago and he's not as active now as he sometimes is come summertime, his back legs spas out sometimes so I have to pick up his back legs and he starts walking again.
Any info would be much appreciated.
Thank You

Daschunds will eat anything you give them. Giving them table food only encourages them to eat too much, since what you give them is not a measured amount. Try sticking with a dog food that is low in fat. I use Royal Canin food formulated especially for Doxies. They love raw carrots and pieces of apple for snacks. Most dog snacks have too many calories if you are trying to keep you Doxie at a good weight.

My parents have a short haired daschund. He is the light of my father's life (except for my mom ,kids and grandkids) After his toy poodle died we thought my father would die too. He said he didn't want another dog,but we got him one anyway sadly thinking that the dog would outlive my father. It pains me to think of losing my father but to see him happy I think it is worth it. Needless to say Samuel L. Jackson (the dog's name) is the light of his eyes also. He is very smart!! He also has a weight problem. We try not to give him table scraps except for meat no pork. He also gets greenies and other treats. I think he may need more exercise than he gets. Unfortunaley my parents are handicapped and I have limited mobility right now. I hope that soon I will be able to walk him more. He sure isn't very good on the leash though. Any sugestions? I think he is three is that to late for leash training? PLEASE HELP asap.

I have had three daschunds. Two were short hairs. The first lived over 20 years! He also had back disc problems and we had to do surgery. The doxie I have now is a long hair and we have the very same weight problems. My vet tested him for thyroid problems, but it came out normal. We had him on a special prescrition food of 1/3 cup 2 times a day. We stopped all treats except for carrots. He was always hungry and we had to watch that he didn't get to my other dog's food before we could pick it up. He lost about a pound and then the loss stopped. Now we have him on Royal Canin Daschund food. He loves it, but at 1/3 cup 2 times a day, which is under what the bag says, he is not losing any more. I think it's a daschund thing! I cannot feed him any less. As it is he is constantly looking for crumbs that might have dropped to the floor and scratching on the pantry door (he's worn of the paint!) Right now he is at about 16 pounds. I am not going to starve him, so to heck with it! He's not really fat and he's happy, so I have made up my mind that I'm not goind to drive myself nuts to get him down to a weight he just can't get to. Just love your doxie and forget about driving youself crazy about the weight. You seem to be feeding him right and you cant force him to excersize more due to his disc condition. In the summer I took my doxie into the pool with me to swim. He loved it and it was great excersize, but now it is too cold for swimming. Doxie's seem to have weight problems as a rule, so you are not alone. You have followed your vets reccommendations. You can't do much more than that. Just love him. He's given you so much love for 13 years! Don't drive yourself crazy.
