Rosso is a senior dog?

October 16, 2009 -

Pet:

...Did anyone tell him?

Rosso is feeling better (he’s had Valley Fever). And I can tell this not so much from his healthy weight gain, or the fact that he’s not hanging around in pain, but because he’s starting to act like a naughty puppy. Somehow getting better has brought my dog back to his childhood—a fountain of youth as it were—and along with being energetic and much happier, he’s borderline hyper and much more akin to getting into the trash or checking out the counter. Things he hasn’t done in years.

Now Rosso hasn’t been sick for years, so as I write this I wonder what it is. Perhaps recovering from Valley Fever isn’t all of it. You see, my wonderful red boy is now eight and I graduated him to senior food and, perhaps more importantly, a glucosamine and chondroitin supplement. I have to say that the two things together must be what has given my dog that pep in his step. I can’t believe the difference it has made for him and, despite the naughtiness, I’m very happy to see him acting young again. At eight, and suffering from the Valley Fever, Rosso seemed like a very old dog indeed and it just absolutely broke my heart.

I’ve heard similar stories from my friends and colleagues at work (I work at PetSmart’s headquarters). If any of his youthfulness can be attributed to the supplement, I highly recommend it for anyone who’s dog is getting along to six years of age. Also important, and always hard to know when to switch to it is senior food. I think I switched too late, so I looked around for a helpful guide. Here’s an article on Senior Foods for Dogs that gives some good info.

Has anyone else tried these supplements? Has it helped your dog, too? You can get them at PetSmart, which is one place they have them: glucosamine and chondroitin supplements.
