DENTAL DEEP CLEANING??? yikes!

Like I have mentioned Ernie is my first pet dog, I rescued him with those scares he has onhis paws im sure he had a ruff past. The vet recomend a dental deep cleaning for him because he has tartar and iv been brushing his teeth in hope that it will go away but its gotten only a little better. I know it benefits him but it hurts me to have to leave him pretty much all day for that prosedure. I am terrified of him being put under anesthia, I might sound silly but he is my baby and i love him and i dont want him to be in pain afterwards, because if its like when we humans get our deep cleaning our teach ache for at lease 2weeks. Any alternatives?
