Amputation or Not?
October 29, 2009 -
I have a 14 year old doxie who has spindle cell carcimona on his foot. I have already had it removed seven times now. It has invaded the entire foot now, no pads to be seen; one toe nail in the middle of his foot and the others squished off to the side. The vets says it really cant be debulked (removed as best he can) anymore. Either choice is good he says "amputation or putting him down", I am beside myself I don't know what to do. His sight is very limited and his hearing is going and to boot he has arthritis in his spine. Am I being selfish if I amputate or should I just let him go? Anyone out there has similar experiences? I have to make a decision soon, like in a couple of days it is getting very uncomfortable for him to walk on the tumor.

Sounds like your doxie has lived a full life and I know its tough but you must think about what is best for the little guy. What would his quality of life be like without his foot and all of his other issues? I had a 10 yr old jack russell who somehow got spinal meningitis and we spent 2 months putting her through kemo trying to save her, but in the end we put her down, one of the toughest things to do.
