Who Put the Washcloth in My Bed?

Sophia - our elegant yet silly tabby girl

November 9, 2009 -

It sounds like a crazy question, but I heard myself ask it this morning.

“Who put the washcloth in the bed?”

None of the humans in our household 'fessed up. Yet somehow, a green washcloth made its way from a decorative wicker basket in the master bathroom into the bed. Not just “on” the bed – but “in” the bed, under the top layer of covers.
So if it wasn’t my son or my husband, it had to be a cat. And if it had to be a cat, it had to be Sophia. She’s our elegant gray tabby who, despite her regal looks and matriarchal status, has a downright silly side. It’s a unique and wonderful duality that adds to her charm and makes her such a special part of our family.

You’d think that at 11 years she’d shed her kitteny ways by now. But not so much. She still enjoys the game of “borrowing” things that don’t belong to her and relocating them to the most unlikely of places. We always know when she’s up to her antics, by the sound of her meowing loudly and with a purpose (usually in the middle of the night). Whatever the object is – a sock, a small stuffed toy, one of my son’s Star Wars action figures or in this morning’s case, a washcloth – she deposits it as she sees fit in the place of her choosing.

We once found a little green Army man in one of my husband’s shoes. Another time, a very expensive make-up brush turned up in the kitchen sink. Then there was the plastic-baseball cupcake topper that I found in the kitty food bowl. There have been embarrassing moments as well … like the time she must’ve rummaged through a bathroom trashcan and found the greatest of treasures: an empty toilet paper roll. She happily pranced into the kitchen and placed it on the floor. Our dinner guests were taken aback at first, but then (thankfully) found humor in the situation.
I cannot imagine life without these little incidents – or having friends who didn’t find them just as amusing as we do. It’s all part of sharing your household with cats. Then you too can wake up in the morning and ask, “Hey – who put the washcloth in the bed?”

I found her digging in a trash can, so she LOVES to eat everything. She's a talker. Likes to chase her sister around the house.
