New puppy, please help
September 21, 2009 -
This past weekend,I got a new 5 1/2 week old puppy. When my husband and I took the puppy home we try to feed him some dry puppy food with some water to make it softer but he ended up throwing that up. So we call the breeder and she told us that she had him on can puppy food, so we switch it to can food. But ever since we switch from dry puppy food to can puppy food my puppy has had diarrha.
What should I do to stop the diarrha? Is there anything I can give him before having to take him to the Vet? Please help, thanks

GM Dillinger - so sad for the puppy, nothing worse than an upset tummy.
I think the main problem is the puppy is only 5 1/2 weeks old, very very young to have left the litter. 8-9 weeks is the best age to leave home, you are dealing with what I call a BabyDog not a puppy. For now I would feed the baby small quantities of plain yogurt, to re-balance the belly's good bacteria, plain rice and boiled chicken. I would also boil the water as well, change in bacteria from something as simple as water can upset the stomach. Then I would purchase a food / kibble made for baby dogs - check out Royal Canin BabyDog - PetSmart sells it. The kibble is smaller and softer perfect for the little guys. Since you didn't mention the breed I am not sure if you have a small or large breed dog. Either way I noticed that Royal Canin has a BabyDog for Mini and Maxi dogs - the Mini food worked for my neighbor, her puppy was very young when she brought her home. Hope this helps
