The Potty War
September 8, 2009 -
It's unavoidable, but with every baby you face the dreaded potty training. And currently I'm scratching my head trying to figure out just how to keep my little tyke from going on my carpet.
For a little while he was doing well,he'd go on his paper and I'd make a big deal out of it "Good boy!!" give him a little treat an give him a little more praise for bein a big boy.
However,it was short lived and he started using the carpet once again. What happened?
I'm trying to get him back into it but when I put him on his paper he thinks it's play time, and when I see him do the potty dance (spinning in circles an sniffing the ground) I try to pick him up an rush him to the paper as fast as possible so he knows that's where it goes.
The odd thing is,sometimes he'll go on it to do one thing and I praise him for it,but not very long after he goes an does the other on the carpet.
I tell him no in a stern voice an shake a finger at him but the kids a rebel.Nothing really seems to be working with him as far as house training.
Maybe outside will hold better results?
Anyone have any advice?

Ok here is the thing. Puppies are very confused they get things one day then the next they forget. one thing is for sure though. You shouldn't scold them for the accident. Simply ignore the mess, bring them outdoors immediately and then return 5 minutes later and clean it up thouroughly with an enzyme cleaner to get the entire smell out. What worked for me is I made a bladder chart and used the oven timer. I would record when the pup had a drink/food vs. how long he could hold it. Then I set the timer and when his bladder was at an hour he went out every hour except when crated (1 hour added to months of age, until you reach 8 hours) and when he had the hang of it the time was extended. another trick is when you go outside bring him to the pee-pee spot tell him "pee-pee" and stand there looking bored, when he goes give him praise(for long times away/overnight.. I tell him to "empty the tank" once he is peeing, they understand it after a while and empty the tank) don't bring him in straight away after the potty or you will get stalling later when they figure it out. I run around a few minutes and then we go in. If he doesn't go potty bring him inside for a few minutes in a confined space like the crate or the bathroom/kitchen and try to do a down stay for a few minutes or the bed command(place) after a few minutes return to the same potty outside steps and usually this will get success. remember to praise the good and ignore the bad because puppies want any attention they can get and don't understand the difference much yet. It will strengthen your relationship. read Dr. Nicolas Dodmans research he is a whiz. no pun oops...sorry.

I had the same thing happen. My puppy was totally getting the hang of it, then he started having lots of accidents. I've heard this is ot be expected. The best thing I learned is to not give them room to fail. Basically, take them out mroe than you think is necesary, to avoid ever having accident son the carpet. Also, when you take him outside, make sure you make him understand you're not just magically getting him outside, let him see you open the door, etc. Good luck!!

Potty training is one of the hardest aspects of having a new puppy. I recommend that you go to a potty training class at Petsmart where we have accredited instructors. in other words? THEY REALLY KNOW THEIR JUNK! lol i took my Yorkie to a class a few years ago and the difference was immediate. In my store they have $5 classes. check it out, I know you will be nothing but pleased.
