Can Anyone Help Me with Nail Grinders?

July 20, 2009 -

Pet:
Max

Remember the sound of the tap dancing penguins from Happy Feet? That's the same sound you get when you combine a Jack Russell and hardwood floors, and in all honesty Max sort of looks like he's trying to dance on ice as he slides all around my house. But all his dancing reeks havoc on the wood, especially since Max's super power is his ability to regrow his nails just seconds after I'm done clipping them. I've been thinking of buying some kind of nail grinder - Pedipaws, Peticure, or something else - for a little while now, but I have no idea really what I'm looking for. I've been leaning towards it not just for the sake of my floors, but because Max has brittle nails that sometimes crack when I clip them and I know that's got to hurt. So I'm asking - what experiences you've all had with nail grinders - what brands/models do you recommend? I need something that can handle both his little nails and Maya's (she's a Pit/Greyhound mix). And I don't want something that I'm going to have to replace in a year.

Thanks everyone for the info! I got a Pedipaws the other day and tried it out... Max was pretty good about it, actually much better than what he is with the clippers. Maya wasn't too happy with the whole ordeal though, but I have a feeling that had more to do with the fact that I was so clumsy with it.

I really took the time to get them used to it before actually attempting to use it on them - I really think that made all the difference. I let them smell it (in Max's case lick it)and rubbed it on their feet and legs with it turned off until they were completely comfortable. Then I turned it on and just left it laying on the floor and let them investigate it. Once they seemed like they cared less I moved on to actually using it. I only did one foot the first time though - I thought trying to do all 4 might be too overwhelming. I brought it out again 2 days later and did the other 3 paws.

I still haven't tried it on the cats... I don't think I'm going to either. I received enough dirty looks from them while working with the dogs to know it would not be in my best interest to even attempt it.

Thanks for the info on Pedipaws. I've seen it advertised. I've always had my Pug's nails dremeled by the groomer but there is an extra charge for that. I'll get the Pedipaws and try it out!

pedipaws is a great thing to get!! I totally approve!! but if your dog can not handle it u can also get your dogs nails trimmed in min. at ur local petsmart groomer for about $9, and they cut it short but not where it hurts your dog, but if your like me and dont wanna spend $9 everytime, i recommend pedipaws.

I've tried Pedipaws, but so far my dogs don't like the sound of them so I haven't gotten anywhere with it (it says to get them used to them slowly so I still have hope). However, I was excited when it came out because I've known several dog parents that use a dremel tool with a tiny sander to do their dogs nails (a couple have wood floors like you) and they swear by it. The Pedipaws is basically the same thing, just retrofitted for use on pets.

I bought the Pedipaws and use it on my dogs. It took quite a few tries for them to get used to the sound and feel of it. In fact, they're still getting used to it. One of my dogs accepts it pretty well, while the other is taking a little longer. I would recommend it to anyone who has the patience and time to introduce it to their pets as the directions suggest. Although, my cat won't let me near her with it!

Have you used a Pedipaws? I was reading reviews on a few different websites and found a some less than favorable ones especially when it came to using them on a large dog - that's why I decided I should ask REAL people (not reviews) about what they've used and what they thought about them.

You need to go to a pet store or walmart somewhere and buy a pedi paws like they show on tv.
