My dog at my shoes. And socks. And toilet brush.

September 15, 2009 -
Molly ate her first pair of sandals the week we adopted her. We were annoyed, but brushed it off as our own carelessness for leaving them in her reach.
We went several months without incident but now she's on the prowl once again. She ate four pairs of sandals last week! She's picky, too, only leather flip flops have fallen victim to her chompers; no runnings shoes or heels.
The weirdest thing was when she ate the toilet brush. Of all the things to chew, a toilet brush, really?! To each their own I suppose.
What's the weirdest thing your pet has destroyed? Any tips on how to avoid this!?

I forgot the best way to break them of the game. Teach her the "drop it game" there are instructions online on how to teach this. Never chase after your dog no matter how badly you want the item. Once they know how to "drop it" use it when they grab something and as soon as they drop the item they get huge praise and other commands to distract them from grabbing it again... then teach the
"leave it" command the same way. good luck

My dog will get into all sorts of trouble when he is bored. Sometimes dogs aren't only physically bored but, mentally. One trainer I went to told us that if you don't play with your dogs toys she will find toys of your to play with. "she chases me when I grab her cellphone or slipper it is such a fun game" make sure your dog gets game time with you as well as that long walk or run she needs. I can tell when my dog gets a look in his pretty eggplant colored eyes it just says " I am lookin' for trouble" some dogs will prefer a certain smell or taste and feet are one of our smelliest parts so it makes sense they go for shoes and socks etc. My remedy was pretty easy. I cut him off from access. I have a walk in closet and put my shoes on a shelf (you can use an over door rack or a luggage trunk) I put my clothes in a hamper in closet and he is never allowed in the closet. He is still formally a puppy at 1 and a half so I make my adjustments until such urges in puppy brain pass.

Hahaha, I had that same thought, but she hates having her teeth brushed. Every time I try she looks humiliated and starts shaking. I can't imagine anyhting about a toilet brush smelling appetizing though, blech.

As far as the toilet brush, maybe you should get her a large toothbrush? maybe she's trying to tell you she wants to brush her teeth.

Ok, I'm glad I'm not the only person whose dog has a shoe fetish. I agree, it's so hard to scold them when they look so darn cute causing trouble! Sigh.

I feel your pain. I have to hide my flip flops. I tied a couple of old socks together into knots and she loves it. I think its a foot fetish. Anything to do with your feet they love.

Toilet brushes are cheap but leather sandals can run into some money. Bree loves shoes too but especially my tennis shoes. She eats the shoe laces and then proceeds to tear the lining out of the shoes. She will pull my slipper off my foot, beat the tar out of it, and then rid it of any kind of decoration like a bow or whatever it might be. Now she is destroying her plush toys. Stuffing everywhere. I thought maybe she was bored so we tried more exercise. That hasn't solved the problem either. I have scolded her and she looks at me like "WHAT???????" It's kind of hard to be mean when she is looking at me with her head cocked to one side, her ears up, and a big smile on her face. No doubt that she has me wrapped around her paw. I would like to know the answer to this chewing problem also.
