My Dog Broke his Own Leg

September 8, 2009 -
When I got home from work last Thursday, Bruno was casually hopping around on three legs. At first, I hoped that maybe he'd just stepped on a thorn, or broken a nail, but when I got closer I could tell he was in a great deal of pain.
I heaved his 55 pounds of puppiness into the car and headed to the vet.
The xrays showed that my dear boy had broken a bone in his foot. How you ask? I have no idea. The vet said it could happen just playing or jumping wrong.
After a few hours, $700 in bills, a full leg cast and a lampshade collar, we headed back home.
Poor Bruno wasn't even allowed pain meds for the first few days so that he wouldn't bear weight on the injured paw. I felt awful, but made the most of the situation by having all my friends sign his cast, and nicknaming him Peg Leg.
He's in the crate on bed rest for three weeks and needs weekly check-ups. Overall, he's in pretty good spirits and is pretty graceful on three legs.
Has anyone else's pet ever injured themself like this?!

Bruno's having a rough time...the splint on his leg caused cuts and bleeding, so now it can't be wrapped and has to be sprayed with antiseptic stuff to avoid infection. On top of that he's been vomitting a lot. I mean A LOT. So he's been at the vet today getting tummy x-rays. Sigh.

Our dog was hit by a car 5 months ago and I started a blog, in my dog's voice, to help dog owners deal with the ordeal when their dogs are injured. I found that having the blog has helped dog owners go through this period of time, to help their dogs heal. (People like talking to a dog, what can I say!) I would like to also start a time line, what to expect, when to expect it, i.e. when the x-rays, when the dog can start walking, etc.
I was wondering if you would like to contribute photos of Bruno to our dog Joey's blog, any comments about what it's been like for you when your dog was injured, time line, etc. Like above. Joey will write back to you, for sure! Maybe even some of Joey's cyber-friends will share their experiences with you.
The blog is non-commercial (but we do have some Google Ads on it).
You can check out the blog: It's www.dogsdontlookbothways.com (first time) or www.dogsdontlookbothways.com/joeys_blog after that. We have one dog right now who has a broken leg and who has been given his own posts and who is actively blogging with us.
You can write back through the "comment" form on the blog's "contact me" page, or anywhere else.
Thank you.
