Can a Dog Jog? Help!
July 16, 2009 -
I've recently started running more often, and would love to be able to kill two birds with one stone, and exercise the dogs while I run.
Since I live in Phoenix, I wouldn't dream of doing this in the summer, but in the winter when it's gorgeous out, this could be a good plan.
When I tire myself out, I generally just collapse, but dogs seem to keep on pushing with irrational excitement. I see people running with dogs all the time, but how do you know if your dog is fit enough and built for running?

My dogs need daily running and can handle all of the exercise, I guess it depends on the type and breed of dog.

I jog 3 miles with my Pit mix 3x a week, but leave my Jack Russell at home - his little legs have to carry him twice as fast to keep up with us and it's just not fair. But we built up to that distance slowly - for both our sakes.
So that my other dog doesn't feel neglected I make sure I walk them both on the other days. But just walking 4.5 miles isn't enough to tire them out. They both wear backpacks and carry various things to weigh them down to make them work harder (= more tired pooches) - bottled water, mini first aid kit, cell phone, my ID and a collapsible water bowl. But just like with the distance, the amount of weight they carry I slowly built up over time.
I have the opposite problem as you - living in Cleveland I don't want to be out jogging in the winter. So I've taught the dogs how to use the treadmill. It's a great way to build up their endurance and to keep them from bouncing off the walls in bad weather.

I would ask the vet. My mom tries to jog with me but I get so excited I like to jump up on her and of course I can run faster than she probably wants to. I need to practice jogging. Good Luck!!!
