On the frontline: The Red Ant Army
July 16, 2009 -
Yesterday morning, our daily routine was interrupted by an army of ants. First I saw Copley start dancing, then they got me. I started dancing. (For onlookers I'd image that both of us were doing the "Elaine from Seinfeld" dance, yeah!)
My feet are covered in welts and are buring - now I know whey they call them fire ants. It burns! The bites also leave these nasty pimple like bumps (puss and all - eiw).
Dogs are amazing, they must have a high tolerance for pain. While I put knee high boots on this morning, Copley put on her hunting face and was back out there harassing the ants.
From now on, I'll be wearing closed toed shoes for my morning walk.
But, I did find a great article on what to do if you run into an army of red ants: http://www.fireant.net/Bites/
Have you ever been bitten by an ant?

Fire ants are everywhere here in Texas. I have been attacked by them numerous times. You have to watch the sneaky varmints because a bunch of them will get on you and then bite all at the same time. Now THAT'S when you will do a serious jig. Have you ever hit a mound of them with a weedeater? Not fun. The bites sting, burn, itch, and fester. So far, my pup has not gotten into fire ants but she does like to chase red wasps, yellow jackets, and anything that flies. it's just a matter of time before one of them gets her too.
