Petiquette
July 21, 2009 -
There’s a lot to be said about how to behave with your pet, or someone else’s. Charlotte Reed has a book, Miss Fido Manners Complete Book of Dog Etiquette for how to behave with pets, but I’m going to take a stab at outlining a more few of the rules we, as pet parents should abide by, as well as some for our pet-less counterparts.
1. DO pick up after your dog. Always. For everyone’s sake, if you see a no-pickup offender, politely offer them a cleanup bag of your own. Your generosity will surely surprise them.
2. DON’T allow your dog to offend others. This includes incessant barking, inappropriate self-expression, unpleasant odors, jumping, begging, drooling…. You get the picture.
3. DON’T intentionally offend me or my dog. There’s never any reason to make snide comments about my dog’s breed, name or collar choice.
4. DO ask me if it’s OK that you pet my dog. As Jessica says in her Raising the Woof blog, “You wouldn’t run up to someone’s baby and touch it without asking, so don’t do that to Pet Parents.” So true.
5. DO keep your dogs on a leash when in public. This is for everyone’s safety.
What kinds pet/pet parent behavior do you think is absolutely necessary/appalling?
