Who says cats and dogs can’t get along?

I have two very important guests staying with me for the next two weeks. I’m watching my mom’s cats while she is out of town and the boys couldn’t be more excited! They currently live with and love our resident housecat, Missy. Believe it or not, Missy adores the dogs just as much and plays with them all the time.
Missy was Loki’s best friend when he was a baby. Now he thinks all cats want to play with him—although they don’t always return his gestures. All five pets have adjusted very well to the change. Everyone comes out for “puppy-kitty treat time” every morning and night. Plus, the dogs seem to understand that the cats aren’t here for an extended play date.
Our cat, Missy, was the inspiration for my interest in the Japanese Chin breed. I had a couple of “must haves” in mind when I was researching which breed was right for me:
- Gets along with cats
- Doesn’t bark excessively
- Doesn’t require a backyard
At the time, I lived in an apartment without a backyard and didn’t want to disturb my neighbors. I came across the Japanese Chin breed after hours of research. They are very cat-like in nature—evening cleaning their face with their paws like a cat. Best of all, they can be trained to use a litter box! And, they get along beautifully with cats.
Japanese Chin are very quiet dogs and only bark at the mailman and when the doorbell rings. In fact, I’ve never heard Mogwai bark at all and Loki howls (or “woos”), which is more adorable than anything else!
I’m so happy that I took the time to thoroughly research the best breed for me. I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect match than the Japanese Chin. In more ways than not, Chin are like cats in dog suits!
Which other breeds get along well with cats? How did you decide on the right breed or dog for you? Share your stores!
